Reconciliation is the one habit that separates books you can trust from books you hope are right. It's simple: once a month, compare every line in QuickBooks to the actual bank statement and make them agree.
Why monthly? Because a duplicate charge, a missed deposit, or a bank error found within 30 days is a five-minute fix. The same problem found eleven months later means re-opening a year of records — and banks limit how long you have to dispute errors at all.
Thirty minutes once a month buys you numbers you can make decisions on. If your last reconciliation was 'sometime last year,' that's exactly what a cleanup project is for — and it costs a lot less than a bad decision made on wrong numbers.
This is exactly the kind of thing I clean up and keep clean for Wichita small businesses — catch-up projects and monthly bookkeeping, quoted flat after a free look at your books.
