Compare Your P&L Month to Month

Bookkeeping Tips • October 19, 2026 • by Zachariah Smiley

Your Profit & Loss statement is only useful if you actually look at it — and the most useful way to look is comparatively. Open it in QuickBooks Online once a month, this month side by side with last month, and hunt for three things.

First, an income dip you can't explain. Second, an expense category that jumped. Third, a recurring charge you no longer use. That fifteen-minute scan routinely catches duplicate subscriptions, quiet price increases from vendors, and expenses landing in the wrong category — all of which distort every decision you make from those numbers.

A single month's P&L tells you what happened. Two months side by side tell you what's changing. That's the version worth acting on.
