Owner's Draw Is Not an Expense

Bookkeeping Tips • October 24, 2026 • by Zachariah Smiley

It feels logical: money left the business to pay you, so it's an expense. For most single-member LLCs and sole proprietors, it isn't — and categorizing owner payments as 'Owner Pay,' 'Wages,' or 'Office Expense' quietly understates your profit, skews your P&L, and makes reconciliation harder than it needs to be.

Owner payments belong in an Owner's Draw equity account in QuickBooks Online. The money still moves the same way; it's simply reported where it belongs — as you taking value out of the business, not the business spending money.

And the companion rule: keep personal spending on a personal card. Clean draws plus clean accounts make your real profit visible — which is the number every decision depends on.
