Bookkeeping Tips • November 1, 2026 • by Zachariah Smiley
Most cash crunches don't come out of nowhere. The bank balance looked fine on Monday, then rent, payroll, and a supplier bill all landed in the same week — and suddenly a profitable business is scrambling. The problem usually isn't earnings. It's that nobody looked ahead.
At the start of the month, give it ten minutes in QuickBooks Online. Check three numbers: your actual, reconciled bank balance, the customer invoices due in the next two weeks, and the bills and payroll due in the next two weeks. Put them side by side and do the simple math.
If what's going out beats what's coming in, you still have options while it's early: send a friendly invoice reminder today, hold a discretionary purchase, or ask a vendor about timing. Make this two-week look-ahead the first step of your monthly routine, right alongside reconciliation, and cash stops being a surprise.
This is exactly the kind of thing I clean up and keep clean for Wichita small businesses — catch-up projects and monthly bookkeeping, quoted flat after a free look at your books.
